1. Introduction

On the 14th of February, 2014 students from Adzokoe LA Junior High School converged at the Global Evangelical Church in Adzokoe Peki to participate in the maiden edition of the south dayi district career fair.

The program started at about 12.45 pm with an opening prayer by Miss Beatrice Dake a Form three student from Adzokoe LA Junior High School. There was a short introduction of the career fair by Mawuli Kwesi Aboagye, the Executive Secretary of AFRICED Ghana. The objective of the fair is to expose students to various career paths available and also motivate students to stay in school.

Aboagye finished his introduction with a short poem entitled  “A Career”.

Resource persons present at the fair included Ben Ofori, a Youth Worker, Dr. Michael Ahedor, a Medical Doctor, Mr. Charles Nyanteh, a Social Worker, Mr. Edem Adjordor, a Volunteer, Miss Alberta Esinam Kondoh, a Banker, Mrs. Ruth Todzro, Politician, Mr. Hope Agbo, an Educationist and Madam Mavis Agumeh, a Nurse.

Resource persons had fifteen minutes to do a presentation on their careers and shared personal experiences to motivate the students to aim for whatever they want to be on this earth.

Chairman for the maiden edition of the fair was Togbe Kwadzo Drah XI, Chief of Adzokoe Peki.

2. Challenges

The fair is supposed to bring students from the district together in the spirit of unity and purpose. We invited three communities. These included Kaira, Todome and Adzokoe. Transporting students from Kaira and Todome became impossible because our targeted sponsor wanted about GH400 cedis to bring the students which the organization could not afford. We were really sad because the students were really looking forward to the event but had to disappoint them at the eleventh hour.

The absence of parents during the fair was an incentive to the whole discussions as most parents have final say in what the children becomes in future.

3. Opportunities

People and some local businesses are really committed to our programs in the communities but are not willing to support with funds. We will make more effort to integrate the communities with our programs by inviting them to our programs. Eg. Posters, Flyers and beat gong gong to publicize our programs.

We would collaborate with Secondary Schools and Teacher Training institutions in the South Dayi district for use of buses to transport students for the next Career Fair.

United Projects have proposed an exchange program for Junior High students from deprived communities to spend a day interacting with senior high students in the region. AFRICED believes that such interaction would help JHS to aspire to gain admissions into secondary schools and beyond.

4. Recommendations

There is a great need for events such as a career fair for students in Ghana. It is our aim to have the fair on an annual basis. Our program was to bring all the students to one venue for the fair but because of transportation problems we could not achieve this and had to hold it with one school. We will address this next year by starting our fundraising drives towards the career fair 2015 early.

5. Conclusion
